Pine Tree Riot — the Beginning of the Rebellion

As pine trees were so precious for building army ships, the British government issued a statute that banned 12-inch diameter trees to be cut. A New Hampshire mill owner, who refused to pay the fine for having cut the forbidden pine trees, started a riot with other mill owners and townsmen against the sheriff and his deputy who came to arrest the mill owner. In short, the two officials were whipped with a tree switch and forced out of the town with glee.

This act was taken as one of the first protests against British rule and policies, so the pine tree became associated with rebellion. This made it a perfect fit for the revolutionary flag(s).

“There are a few different reasons people fly “Appeal to Heaven” flags today, said Jared Holt, a senior analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based think tank that tracks online hate, disinformation and extremism.

Some fans of it identify with a “patriot” movement that obsesses over the Founding Fathers and the American Revolution, he said. Others adhere to a Christian nationalist worldview that seeks to elevate Christianity in public life.

“It’s not abundantly clear which of those reasons would be accurate” in this situation, Holt said. But he called the display outside Alito’s home “alarming,” saying those who do fly the flag are often advocating for “more intolerant and *restrictive forms of government* aligned with a specific religious philosophy.”

Communities across the American South have removed Confederate monuments from public spaces in recent years. Some have gone to museums, others are locked away in storage.

But one particularly controversial statue from Charlottesville, Va. is on a different journey — to be transformed into something new.

The massive bronze sculpture of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, in uniform, astride his horse Traveller, stood in a downtown Charlottesville park for nearly a century. It was at the center of a deadly white nationalist rally in 2017, when Neo-Nazis and white supremacists tried to stop the city's plans to remove the statue.

It came down to cheers in July of 2021.

"Today the statue comes down and we are one small step closer to a more perfect union," said then-mayor Nikuyah Walker.
